E Street Band Keyboardist Passes Away

Danny Federici, E Street Band founding member and keyboardist, passed away yesterday afternoon in New York City after a long struggle with melanoma. He was 58 years old. He had taken an absence from the band's current tour in November and made a surprise appearance in Indianapolis on March 20th and performed a few songs with the band.

Federici and the E Street Band's drummer, Vini Lopez, saw Springsteen perform at Asbury Park and convinced him to leave his band, Earth, for their band, Child. Child eventually evolved into The E Street Band.

Federici's distinct organ and accordian playing can be heard on tracks like "Hungry Heart," "Kitty's Back," and "4th of July Asbury Park (Sandy)." He's played on every E Street Band record.
