Portland Cello Project

In a couple of years, the Portland Cello Project, an all cellist collection, has built an eclectic repertoire that extends from Brittany Spears covers to Bach arrangements. Portland Cello Project was the created by Tony Rogers, a cellist who briefly lived in Portland. Rogers wanted to form a flexible cello ensemble that could play with alternative and rock bands but also do Beethoven.

All Along the Watchtower

"I think Dylan wrote one of the timeless songs of all time when he wrote that song, and it's one of those songs that can be interpreted so many ways.." -Warren Haynes

"All Along the Watchtower" is a song written and performed by Bob Dylan. Dylan performed this very song more often at any concert than any of his other compositions. At the end of 2007, it was estimated that he had sung the song 1,748 times on stage.

Dylan, recovering from a motorcycle accident which marked his career shift, had begun to read the Bible on a daily basis. The Book of Isiah, Chapter 21, verses 5-9, contains the words is where Dylan found inspiration for the song.

The song has been covered an uncountable number of artists, including Jimi Hendrix Experience and U2.

The Jimi Hendrix Expierence began to record their cover when Hendrix had been given a copy of Dylan's recording. To the Hendrix cover, Dylan replyed by saying, ""It overwhelmed me, really. He had such talent, he could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them. He found things that other people wouldn't think of finding in there. He probably improved upon it by the spaces he was using. I took license with the song from his version, actually, and continue to do it to this day."

U2 covered the song, and then performed the song on tour years later with an additional verse added by Bono. The performance can be seen in their documentary, "Rattle and Hum."

The Dave Matthews version of the song maintains Dylan's three chord structure and key signature, but differs in style. Dave Matthews typically starts the song slow with just vocals and guitar and the rest of the band joins him at the line "the hour is getting late" and the song tempo increasingly picks up.

Other artists to cover the song include Prince, Pearl Jam, Elton John, Eric Clapton, DMC, The Fratellis, Howie Day, The Indigo Girls, John Mellencamp, Lenny Kravitz, Phish, Tori Amos, and Widespread Panic.

Andrew Stockdale, front man of Wolfmother, has stated that the characteristics of their song "Joker and the Thief" came from Dylan's original song, which he has adored for years.

E Street Band Keyboardist Passes Away

Danny Federici, E Street Band founding member and keyboardist, passed away yesterday afternoon in New York City after a long struggle with melanoma. He was 58 years old. He had taken an absence from the band's current tour in November and made a surprise appearance in Indianapolis on March 20th and performed a few songs with the band.

Federici and the E Street Band's drummer, Vini Lopez, saw Springsteen perform at Asbury Park and convinced him to leave his band, Earth, for their band, Child. Child eventually evolved into The E Street Band.

Federici's distinct organ and accordian playing can be heard on tracks like "Hungry Heart," "Kitty's Back," and "4th of July Asbury Park (Sandy)." He's played on every E Street Band record.

New Music Video: The Roots ft. Patrick Stump- Birthday Girl

Weezer

Weezer's new album has been pushed back to June 24.

Elisa Schwartz becomes Elisa Jordana

What's the difference?

Elisa Schwartz is the former Cobra Starship keytarist. Gabe Saporta, Cobra Starship's frontman, says she left to work on her solo career, while Schwartz says she was replaced. Schwartz is also a self described "nervous girl who never really knew where to fit in."

Elisa Jordana is a pop super-starlet, and pretty much the opposite of Shwartz in every possible way.

"I feel like since the whole Cobra Starship thing happened, I've sort of turned into Elisa Jordana. I've been recording and doing photo shoots, and I've sort of turned into this glamorous pop star," Jordana told MTV news. "Like the other night, I decided I needed some press photos — and I really wanted to be in a bathing suit — so I called my friend, we found this Mexican taco stand that was open at, like, 3 a.m., and I just went for it. Elisa Schwartz never would've been able to do that. Elisa Jordana did. So that's the name I chose to use for my new project."

"I wanted to collaborate with the most awesome producers, make hits, get the biggest deal and have fun while doing it," she continued. "I mean, like, I really want to rap, so on 'Nymphomaniac,' I rap. It's that simple."

Jordana admits to tracking the current success of her former band, and says that she is not at all jelous of the band's new keytarst, Victoria Asher.

"She's doing a real good job. I admire her. And she MySpace-messaged me recently, saying, 'I know you have beef with me, but I really love your songs.' She went out of her way to talk to me, which I appreciated," Jordana said. "And I love the new record [Cobra] did. I'll always admire Gabe [Saporta] and what he did for me. I mean, I'm aware part of the reason people are paying attention to me is because of Cobra Starship."

When asked if she'll still play keytar Jordana responded that she would.

"Oh my God, of course! Actually, I can't talk about it too much, but I'm hoping to get my own signature keytar," she said. "I want it to be covered with hearts and flowers, and I want it to be wireless. I'm a really good dancer, so I want to be able to move when I'm performing. And I'm a gymnast, too, so I wanna do gymnastics in my set. But who knows? The keytar is pretty heavy."

In the Studio

Relient K wrote on their blog that they are currently in a studio in Nashville recording some new songs, and they will later tell the reason for it.

Dedicated to Vanilla Ice

I found this video today when doing some major youtubing. I like covers, a lot. I enjoy seeing different artists takes on classic songs. I thought this one was really good, though no one will ever be able to do ANYTHING better than David Bowie and Freddie Mercury.
